I wish I had a good answer. Don't turn it too far or you'll break the threads. The only thing that worked for me, and I found this purely by chance, was to take the end off and start it 180 degrees opposite where I started it before. It is definitely a design flaw, as is the complete absence of clear instructions on how to place the batteries. I suggest using a marker to indicate where you should start screwing in the end part, and one indicating the - and + battery poles. I wish I had a good answer.

I use the Sanyo Enloop AA batteries and they work great. I would say that rechargeables will work well but will NOT last as long as regular alkaline batteries. They are of course way cheaper than throw aways. This statement assumes that you are using some kind of quality rechargeable batteries. I have purchase some batteries from China, that advertize high capacity ratings, that do NOT carry the capacity they are advertized to carry. That is why I purchased the Sanyo batteries - I had confidence that they would carry the charge and as important, the Sanyo batteries also will carry the advertized capacity, at least to a high degree, for a year.
