Donnie Emerson and elder brother Joe were scions of a touchingly encouraging farmer from the very rural Washington State: when he wasn’t ploughing fields, Emerson senior was ploughing money into his sons’ would-be music career, buying them instruments, building a studio and even a concert hall on his land. The privately-pressed Dreamin’ Wild appeared in June 1979, sporting an unforgettable photo of Donnie and Joe in their monogrammed white jumpsuits, looking like proud Church Of Elvis garage hands. As an album, it’s as quizzical, heartfelt and oddly cherishable as the best outsider art, ranging between the sweet-natured, ramshackle white soul of Good Time and the arid one-chord funk groove of Give Me The Chance, enlivened by incongruous Flash Gordon contrails of rudimentary synth. Performances are compellingly precarious: on Feels Like The Sun, Joe’s decelerating drums conjure visions of a man being painstakingly coated in quick-drying tar.
