Through this award program, 100 winning students from across the country will be paired with a university-level mentoring scientist to collaborate on an important cancer research project. Deadline: March 17th. Byrd girls and boys track teams swept the team titles last Friday at North DeSoto High School at the 2017 Griffin Opener. Both teams combined won 15 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. 10 of the 15 victories were claimed by the girls team.

Senior Kyah Loyd led the way with 25 points for the girls with four golds (400m, 100h, 4x200, 4x400). Junior Grace Loftin had two victories herself (1600m and 3200m) scoring 20 points. And Junior Nia Johnson had 19 points scoring in the 100m, Long Jump, 4x100, and 4x200.

Other female medalists include Jonnai Jones, Becca Brown, Claire White, Destiny Jones, Aleceya Harrison, Mairead Smith, Alysse Ellison, Foluwa Desalu, Brandi Davis, and Rickesha Farris. On the boys side sophomore Zaige Wills led the scoring with 20.5 points. He scored in the 100m, 200m, 4x200, and the 4x400. The young distance tandem of freshman Austin Mikovich and sophomore Allen England dominated the longer races as they went 1-2 in each (1600m & 3200m). They also each scored 19.5 points as they ran a leg on a 4x400 squad as well.
